The 69 Eyes

“Back In Blood”

7/11/09

“Back in blood, blood is the new black…”

With The 69 Eyes celebrating 20 years together this year they once again prove without a doubt that they still know how to rock. “Back In Blood” opens a new chapter in their Gothic history.  From the sound of the first heavy guitar chord drowned out by Jyrki’s dark and wicked vampire snicker I knew I was in for a bloody treat. “Back in Blood” is the heaviest track on the CD and it pulls you into the abyss where you’re left wanting more and they give it to you...with both barrels. The CD proves to be The 69 Eyes heaviest creation to date. A passionate blending of heavy old school rock ‘n’ roll and their Gothic Rock roots: melodic and dark. Jyrki’s voice is magnetic as he powerfully shows his vocal range from high pitched bloodcurdling screams to deep growls and dark guttural laughs.

What makes this CD so unique is the exceptional guitar skills of Bazie and Timo finally being brought to the forefront by producer, Matt Hyde. The entire CD is overflowing with their raw & creative guitar riffs, along with exceptional drum & bass tracks by Jussi & Archzie and enchantingly strong lyrics and vocals.  The overall sound takes you back to music that you loved in the past, without being recognizable.

My favorite tracks: “Back In Blood”, “Some Kind Of Magick” & “Suspiria Snow White” appeal to my desire for heavier music with catchy choruses and amazing screams. “Dead N' Gone” is the CD's most radio friendly track with a solid rock sound and memorable lyrics you can't help but sing along to at the top of your lungs. Though I am not typically a fan of power ballads, I was blown away by the music, orchestration and vocals on "Eternal". Jyrki's voice is magnificent on this track reminiscent of Elvis & Johnny Cash.

“Joined together, bound forever, deeper, stronger, nothing can tear us apart in this world.”

Those lyrics from “Eternal” say it all…and I truly believe that both old and new 69 Eyes fans will agree. This is The 69 Eyes at their best. A Vampiric Masterpiece of epic proportions...I fell in love with the band all over again and have a new favorite 69 Eyes CD.

The 69 Eyes singer, Jyrki 69 describes their sound the best in his 5/26/05 interview, "Gothic Glam Rock from Helsinki". However, let me build on that description by saying 69 Eyes music fuses heavy and melodic, dark and light, tragedy and empathy, heartbreak and compassion. Their newest CD, which is not available in the United States just yet, is a brilliant blending of music creating a genuinely unique sound for The 69 Eyes. Jyrki's deep & sultry vocals are further emphasized by the female vocals in the background as well as the strong backing vocals of guitarist, Bazie and bassist, Archzie. I would have to agree with other fans that compare Jyrki's voice to Elvis, Bowie and Danzig at their best. The lyrics are poetically dark and deep allowing you to peer into his warm soul. I would absolutely love to know what was in his mind when he wrote each and every one of these songs. Quite frankly Jyrki 69 is mesmerizing to hear and watch. The CD is impressive from start to finish and though I enjoy the entire CD, my personal favorites are "Lost Boys", "Nothing on You", "Jimmy", "Hevioso" & "Only You Can Save Me". I can listen to those tracks for days. "Sister of Charity" is a musical masterpiece that pulls at your heart strings. Between the hypnotic voices and classical music in the intro to Jyrki's vocals & Jussi's strong drum beat throughout. This song is absolutely incredible, I get chills when I listen to it. I also got my hands on the "Lost Boys" single CD with the "Pitch Black" bonus track. "Pitch Black" has a very dark sound with heavy guitar riffs throughout! I love it!! I also love the way Jyrki says "black", but you have to hear it for yourself to understand! I really enjoy this group and look forward to what they have to offer in the future. I just can't wait to see them live! The 69 Eyes are a very talented group of musicians and if you don't want to get up and move to their music, you must be dead.
